Smoke plume from Tasmanian fires hangs over Victoria

Victorians can expect to see and smell smoke from the Tasmanian fires as a plume drifts across Victoria today and tomorrow.

State Response Controller Joe Buffone said Victorians can expect to see smoke across the whole of the state today with the plume slowly receding towards the south and the west of the state on Wednesday.

“We are encouraging people who, due to health conditions, are more sensitive to smoke to be aware of this plume and seek medical advice if necessary,” he said.

Mr Buffone urged Victorians to not call Triple Zero if they smell smoke. To ensure the emergency line is available for life threatening emergencies and isn’t tied up with calls about smoke.

Victorians should only call the Triple Zero if they see flames or a solid column of smoke rising from the ground.

Victorians are reminded that smoke can affect your health.

People with heart or lung conditions (including asthma), pregnant women, children, and those over 65 years of age are more sensitive to the effects of breathing in smoke.

Seek medical advice or call NURSE-ON-CALL on 1300 60 60 24 if you are experiencing any discomfort that may be due to smoke exposure such as itchy eyes, sore throat, runny nose or coughing.

Call 000 if anyone is having difficulty breathing, wheezing or experiencing tightness in the chest.
