Wye River-Jamieson Creek Track Fire Contained

POSTED:
21 January 2016

The Wye River-Jamieson Creek Track Fire Incident Controller Alistair Drayton has determined that the fire is contained.

Containment means ‘the spread of the fire is halted’. This is a significant achievement, however there will be hot spots and smoke from within the fire area.

Firefighting resources will remain in place to extinguish the hot spots and to completely secure the fire.

Mr Drayton said it is unlikely the fire will be fully extinguished until there is a fall of substantial rain across the fire area

“I am pleased to be able to announce the fire status change,” Mr Drayton said. “This is a very important development for the Otways community.”

“We have worked over 34 days to achieve containment and will continue our efforts to secure this fire.”

Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley acknowledged the work of the fire crews.

“What a great result,” he said. “The fire crews have done a great job, including The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning forest fire management, Parks Victoria, CFA and other Victorian agencies in response and recovery.

“A special thanks to the New south Wales and New Zealand crews.

“There is still more to be done in securing the fire and supporting communities through the recovery effort.”
